As a child growing up , my imagination always had the best of me. I always thought of Liberians as teachers without a classroom but a library. I thought they all lived in books within the library and that’s why they knew where all the books were and what they were all about. Of course, as I grew up, I learned that that wasn’t the truth at all. To an extent, my claim was right. Librarians were teachers. They taught us how to properly use the library sources and how to utilize our time wisely while in the library.
Seen in shows and cartoons, librarians are always portrayed as cranky, old, and boring folk that don't enjoy their jobs and not that I'm saying that they are, I'm just making a reference. Anyways, I think it would be super cool if the librarians were actually magicians who could pull out any book on the shelf for any reader who had a hard time deciding what to read as if they could read their mind. It would almost be like a cover up as a super hero. That’s why librarians display such calmness, but in reality their wizards!
As technology increase and trees get cut more, I believe that the future of the library will go technological. So, most likely it will be just a huge study building with everyone on their nooks or electric device that holds books but the same concept of library’s will withstand. A place to read a book and study.
Jennifer,
ReplyDeleteYou certainly did have an imagination as a child if you thought librarians lived in the books in the library, but you are correct in thinking of librarians as teachers. They teach you how to use the library to find the information you need.
Librarians always seem to be portrayed in movies as the crabby old maid, unfulfilled women, but by now you have probably learned that they come in all ages, personalities and both sexes. Most of them love the work they do, because it is so varied. They do everything from searching on the internet to shelving books and many jobs in between. When I was a child I wanted to be either a teacher or a librarian. Now I have done both. Maybe you will be able to fulfull all your dreams, too.
You are right about them being like magicians. It often seems like magic when they can find the exact information you need to complete your research.
I believe you are on the right track about the library of the future. We are already beginning to find more and more information electronically and as people become dependent on their gadgets, but we will still need the librarian there to show us how to find it.
